Job Duties: This position is responsible for conducting presentence investigations ordered by the court. The chosen candidate’s primary duties will include investigating and compiling an offender’s criminal history, determining an offender’s criminal history score and any applicable special sentencing rules pursuant to the Kansas Sentencing Guidelines. Speaking with crime victims with regard to victim impact and restitution, testifying in court when requested, keeping apprised of changes to the Kansas Sentencing Guidelines Act and completion of risk need assessments.
Required education and experience: Bachelor’s degree is required with preference given to degrees in a social services field. Minimum of two years of experience in the field of criminal justice is required. This position requires great attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Ability to complete work under time-sensitive deadlines, requiring good time management skills. Computer skills required. Ability to interact with stakeholders in a professional manner is required. Ability to work both independently and with a team is required.
Preferred qualifications: Prior experience in writing presentence investigations in the State of Kansas with extensive knowledge of the Kansas Sentencing Guidelines is preferred. Experience in researching case law and reading statutes are a plus. Risk needs assessment (LSCMI and/or WRNA) certification is plus. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and multi-task is important.
