 This position involves highly sensitive professional work performing legal research, providing advice to judges, drafting orders and other documents at the request of judges, and training and mentoring research attorneys.


 Job duties:
(Position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
  • Reviewing and assessing cases and motions as they are filed with the court for jurisdiction, unique legal issues, and complexity. Drafting orders and other documents at the request of judges.
  • Designing and conducting training classes for research attorneys and externs.
  • Coordinating efforts concerning resources for self-represented litigants and other members of the public interested in the appellate process.
  • Completing any special projects requested by the Chief Judge or the Counsel to the Chief Judge.
  • Representing Court of Appeals at job fairs and law school career days as well as various boards and committees, both internal and external.
  • Keeping internal training manuals up to date.
  • Assisting in the development of technology, including eFiling and case management systems, necessary to process and report the work of the court.
  • Consulting with and acting as liaison to the Appellate Clerk’s office, answering questions and coordinating e-filing on behalf of the court and assisting in the development and refinement of procedures.

Education and experience:  

 Graduation from an accredited law school and two or more years of experience as a licensed attorney.
Must be an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Kansas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 
  • Considerable knowledge of one or more phases of law as required by the assigned duties.
  • Knowledge of general law, state laws, established precedent, and sources of legal reference.
  • Knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence.
  • Ability to apply legal principles and specialized knowledge to individual cases and problems.
  • Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedent concerned in assigned cases and to prepare written memoranda.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to assign, evaluate, and correct the work of subordinate attorneys.
