Job Duties: The Librarian I for the Kansas Supreme Court Law Library is responsible for performing a wide range of professional library tasks under the general supervision of the Librarian II including:
  • Assisting judges, attorneys, and the general public in obtaining legal information and resources.
  • Collaborating with a small team of library professionals to ensure successful daily operations of the Kansas Supreme Court Law Library.
  • Maintaining and enhancing the Kansas Supreme Court Law Library’s collection.
  • Organizing and cataloging the Kansas Supreme Court Law Library’s various resources including books, periodicals, and briefs whether in print or electronic format.
  • Assisting legal professionals and the general public with research inquiries.
Examples of work performed: Assisting judicial staff, attorneys, law clerks and the public in locating needed information either manually or using computer technologies.  Checking materials into and out of the library.  Collecting fees and reconciling money received.  Participating in the supplementing, updating, and maintenance of law library collection, which may include moving, digitizing, or eliminating print resources.  Serving as acquisitions librarian and reference librarian.  Uploading briefs to the West Data Capture System.  Making interlibrary loan requests.  Preparing and assembling materials for binding.  Performing other related work as required.

Required Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university supplemented by a master’s degree in library science.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:  Knowledge of professional principles, practices, procedures, and techniques of library science and legal research.  Knowledge of the general subject matter of a variety of professional, scientific, and general areas of reading material.  Knowledge of the field of legal literature.  Knowledge of library computer technologies and their application, including knowledge of automated library catalog library systems.  Ability to conduct moderately complex legal research.  Ability to communicate ideas effectively orally and in writing.  Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, patrons, and the public.  Excellent communication and organization skills.  Ability to work independently and collaboratively.  Strong attention to detail and accuracy. 

Desired Skills: Working with automated library catalog systems such as Innovative Interfaces or similar system.
